Quick Q&A with Chawana Huangsuntornchai

To begin, could you share a bit about your journey into the world of data privacy and what drew you to the role of Data Protection Officer?

I exposed myself to the value of privacy from a Western perspective during my student years in the European Union, not as a written regulation but a practical value that a European society groomed me into. A decade later, having graduated and written a thesis on personal data protection law from the Netherlands, I was back in Thailand as a public policy researcher with a specialised field in personal data protection. Then I shifted to a practitioner role as a Data Protection Officer as the Thai Personal Data Protection Act B.E.2562 came into enforcement.

What are you most looking forward to about this year’s Data Demystified Summit Bangkok?

Some new data use cases and technological advancements for my food for thought would be preferable.

You describe yourself as a “social engineer” – what does that mean to you in the context of privacy, and how does it shape the way you approach compliance and governance?

In short, I tend to see myself as an ‘engineer’ who solves society’s issues.

Hence, I do not shape myself to utilise any one particular trade to solve any problem in focus. This also applies to privacy compliance, that there are areas to contribute more than legal text, even more so in data governance, where there may not even be any tangible regulation. Being able to perceive a problem and landscape from diverse perspectives (legal, economic, geopolitical, etc.), designing a solution with the same diverse tools yields a more holistic and well-rounded approach for my client. So long as the solution is believed to be most feasible for stakeholders, professional terms (such as legal professional) should be no limit on what tools I can utilise.

What are some common blind spots you’ve observed in how companies manage consent, user rights, or data lifecycle under PDPA?

Mismanagement of personal data, especially when the data user is not from a technical background, is where the compliance program starts to go wrong.

Finally, what excites you most about the future of privacy, and where do you see the role of the Data Protection Officer evolving in the next 1-2 years?

Despite the change of personal data utilisation techniques/approaches, there are living beings at the end of the refinery line. Therefore, a Data Protection Officer is set to uphold the very same values amid ever-changing market development. But to make privacy ‘work’, they first need to understand how a new tool is used, even more so on how human beings from different angles would react to it. So a Data Protection Officer needs to embrace new possibilities that technological advancement has to offer, then, as always, design a data protection program that works for stakeholders.

Chawana’s perspective challenges conventional notions of compliance by advocating for a more human-centred, cross-disciplinary approach to privacy. His ability to view data protection through legal, social, and technological angles makes him an invaluable voice in today’s evolving digital economy. We’re excited to have him join the conversation at Data Demystified Summit Bangkok 2025, where his holistic mindset and practical experience will provide valuable guidance for privacy professionals navigating the PDPA landscape.
